Biography

Prof. Dr. Sayandev DasGupta is one of the most senior surgeons in the city of Kolkata. He got interested in laparoscopic surgery from the very advent of laparoscopy and was one of the very few to start it in Kolkata way back in 1992. In those pioneering days he developed indigenous laparoscopic instruments to cut down the cost. He trained several surgeons in laparoscopy and continues to do so till today. His area of interest is in all general surgical procedures, including laparoscopic hernia surgery and also to provide affordable surgical care to patients.


QUALIFICATIONS

He graduated from Calcutta National Medical College in 1981 and then trained for long years in general surgery at Ramakrishna Mission Seva Prathistan & Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences, Kolkata. He also got training in cancer surgery at Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital (at present Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute), Kolkata. He did his post graduation in general surgery from Calcutta University in 1986.

CURRENT POSITION

He is a faculty for the fellowship courses conducted by IAGES and travels all around India to teach and train juniors in the art and craft of laparoscopy. He is the Past President of Indian Association of Gastro Intestinal Endosurgeons (IAGES), which is the oldest and the largest body of laparoscopic surgeons in India. He is an Associate Member of International Society of Surgery (ISS/SIC). He is the joint editor of the 4th Edition of the book 'Comprehensive Laparoscopic Surgery'. He is also an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Minimal Access Surgery (JMAS). He has contributed chapters in several surgical textbooks.

The concept he focuses on is colon cancer, rectal cancer, etc. These conditions can be treated laparoscopically or by traditional open surgery. The best approach depends on the individual patient and is decided on a case-by-case basis after a thorough workup.
